Jim Williams opened the door of the restaurant for Johnie Ray Johnson and his wife, Karen, on their way out of Mandango's four years ago, just before a wild-eyed man with a shotgun walked into their world and shattered it. Williams, smoking a cigarette in front of the Elk Grove restaurant, wondered why somebody would be out on the town with a shotgun in hand. Then he lost sight of the Johnsons, right when a shotgun blast exploded the peace of the early Saturday evening.

Players in a card game got more than lucky Wednesday when a man pulled out a chainsaw during an argument, but couldn't get it to work. Johnny Ray Johnson, 37, of Leesburg, allegedly swung the chainsaw at a woman and a 6-year-old child during the argument at her Fruitland Park home, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office. However, Johnson couldn't get the chainsaw started, or at least not before two occupants of the home tackled him and took it away.

A Leesburg man went on a rampage early Wednesday with a chain saw inside a Fruitland Park address, authorities say. Fortunately, Johnny Ray Johnson could not get the chain saw to start and no one was seriously injured, according to his arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff's Office. He was arrested on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated child abuse charges.

As this winter's heavy snow continues to thaw, many residents will be placing "gutter repair" at the top of their spring cleaning to-do lists: Local roofers and gutter specialists say they have seen an uptick in calls from residents reporting damage from snow and ice. "People have got mad problems," said Ray Johnson of Johnson Roofing in Newark. "Some of them, their whole gutter and soffit (or underside of eaves) and everything fell down."

The $85 million project is expected to generate up to $2.5 million in annual property taxes. The village is contributing $9.8 million to build the new parking garage. The garage will remain the property of the village although the developer, Sertus Capital Partners, is being allowed to build over the parking deck.

Oak Park village trustees have given tentative blessing to a proposed mixed-use development at the corner of Lake Street and Forest Avenue. Trustees Monday night voted unanimously to accept findings from the village's Plan Commission on the proposed 20-story building by Sertus Capital Partners at Lake and Forest. Trustees will have the matter on its regular agenda for final approval in the next couple weeks, Village President David Pope said.
